Happiness is something we all wish to have, but sometimes have trouble achieving. Modern life contributes to our anxiety; it's busy, fast-paced, stressful, and full of doubt.
At the age of 95 (not a typo!), with wisdom, reflection and passion, Gordon Carton founded Happiness Is Inc., as a way to inspire us to find our happiness within. He knew it's impossible to have a lifetime of happiness, but the gratitude we can have for what makes us smile, and the connections we share with the people around us, the happier we become. And happiness is contagious.
Gordon passed away in 2017, but his legacy lives on with his granddaughter, founding partner and Happiness Is Inc. Chief Happiness Officer Andrea Armstrong. Leading a small group of women working to do the right thing, the Happiness Is Inc. team is dedicated to making high quality casual clothing that makes you feel happy about your purchase. Live it. Wear it. Share it.

We value ethical production and being able to connect directly with the manufacturing process. It makes us really happy knowing the craftspeople and businesses that we are supporting along the way. Keeping our carbon footprint low, and with ethical wages, all our clothing is knit, cut, sewn and dyed locally in Canada. In our early stage, as a brand, picking up an off-the-shelf product, made by someone else and decorating it would have been inherently easier…but being easy isn’t necessarily being right. We also don’t experience the cost efficiency achieved in the volumes that bigger apparel companies do, but we feel it’s worth it to know that your garment was cared for along the way. We may have to say we are sorry on occasion for higher prices, but we think you believe in the importance of supporting the little guys too.

Our clothes share with us many of the characteristics we love about being a Canadian (yup we are!). We go to the extra effort to make all our clothes with premium yarn that's not only strong enough to avoid tearing, fraying or pilling but also comfortable, super soft and easygoing to wear. Respecting nature, we use sustainable and biodegradable yarns such as organic cotton and bamboo. We love that our garments are practical and easy to care for, an essential factor for busy and activepeople. Our tees are preshrunk, garment-dyed, and washed again, so the colours have just the right amount of fade for a well-loved and lived-in look that doesn't shrink. Our supremely soft, preshrunk sweatshirts withstand our extreme seasons, warm in winter, breathable in summer and cozy all the time.

We love our planet and all the activities we do on it, so protecting it is essential. Of course, there are always trade-offs in utility or costs, but there are also trade-offs within better sustainable practices too. Being mindful of our production practices means for now, we use biodegradable certified organic cotton (which uses less water and pesticides compared with conventional cotton) and bamboo. We also use recycled polyester where we need a little. Our production methods have moved to a more made-to-order basis which ensures everything we produced is wanted. We are continually learning about sustainability and talking to our suppliers (buying local keeps emissions down too!), trying to inch our way forward in a way that won't cost the consumer, or our Earth, a fortune. Technology is changing, and hopefully soon, the world will see 100% respun clothing with zero waste or harmful effects. That would make us REALLY HAPPY.
